It has been around for ages, but I often get confused looks when I tell people that I do it whilst being on a plant based vegan lifestyle. I tend to fast for a period between 16-20 hours. This gives me 4 to 8 hours to consume all of my protein, vitamins, and nutrients for the day! I have seen a tremendous difference in my body and love fasting so far. Since life can be pretty social at times, plus I believe that balance is key for any lifestyle; On the weekends I eat as much as I'd like. Konniche wah, Goji Man here. Welcome back to my channel. Today I’m going to be talking about fasting and intermittent fasting for vegans and whether it is actually healthy for the body. Now this is probably one of the most common question I get and lots of you over the last couple of weeks have asked me to do a video on it. Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goji_man/?hl=en Now I just want to quickly start this video and say that fasting and intermitted fasting can be both healthy and damaging for the body. Fasting goes hand in hand with detoxification and if done incorrectly for prolonged periods then it can be very dangerous for the body. Now I have done a video on detoxification, so if you are considering fasting then be sure to watch this first in order to do it correctly. Now let me just get into some of the main benefits of fasting. First and foremost, both fasting and intermitted fasting gives the body an opportunity to rest. Fasting has been carried out for hundreds and hundreds of years. In fact Hipocrates used fasting when helping some of his patients to recover from illness and disease. We now know through the science that fasting can also help with naturally boosting our hormones so that we can get more of an equilibrium in the body, which is pivotal for our health. Then as I said before as well as giving the opportunity to rest, fasting also helps with detoxification and removing those unwanted toxins from the body. So there is lots and lots of benefits for fasting, and there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that it can be very beneficial and healthy when looking to address health conditions in the body. Now there are lots of different ways fasting can be done. You can do full day fasts that last one or more days. Or you can do intermittent fasting in which you only eat during certain periods of the day or week. Some people might intermittently fast with juices and only one meal during the day, while others might fast using juices or water for 5 or more days. Now while short term intermitted fasting can be very beneficial and healthy, I really don’t recommend long term fasting – and this means anything longer than 7-10 days max. The reason for this is that there is very little research around this and I would always air on the side of caution. Now I have seen been people fast for longer periods and they have had dramatic and profound in their health, but this has always been done under the supervision of trained individuals. Its certainly not something you should be doing at home on your own. Now obviously one of the most popular forms of fasting today is intermittent fasting. And generally people will do this from one to three months in order to get the full benefits. So intermittent fasting is where you are essentially not eating for a certain period during the day. So for example most people will get up at 6-7 in the morning and eat breakfast and then snack throughout the rest of the morning. And if this is the case then most people will only allow their digestive track to heal for 7-8 hours per day. So what people do when intermitted fasting is that they allow a 4-8 hour window of eating a day. So they might not eat breakfast and then eat at lunchtime and in the evening. This means the body is getting upwards of 14 hours a day where its being the opportunity to heal. Or they might eat at lunchtime, then around 4 and then around 6-7. Now if you are fasting then you obviously want to ensure that you are getting plenty of protein, healthy fats and lots of starchy carbohydrates in your diet. So lots of nutrient dense food. So now we have talked about some of the benefits and types of fasts available, is this actually supported by science? And this is where it gets slightly confusing. When people talk about the health benefits of fasting, the benefits have usually been derived from studies where the participants have undertaken both intermittent fasting and calorie restriction at the same time. And to make things more complicated, these studies often include those eating standard western diet. So of course when they reduce their levels of saturated fats, cholesterol and processed foods they are all going to get massive benefits in the body. And the science supports this. You see improved cognition, weighloss, improved hormone levels – the list goes on and on. But what about if you are already on a vegan diet. Is fasting healthy and does the science support it. Well herein lies the problem. There are no real studies that have looked at this. There are studies that have compared calorie restriction vs plant based diets and in fact the plant based diets came out clearly on top. So if you are going to fast, do it sensibly and for a short period of time. And make sure you are getting adequate calories and lots of nutrition.

Notes about this video: ** How did I get that 1300-1400 number? Here's my info: I'm 31, 5'2.5, and i'm around 115 lbs. My BMR is actually 1300. I also have high estrogen, slow metabolism, food allergies, slow digestive system (with IBS), and a family history of hypothyroidism. I have never lost weight easily, unless I create a caloric deficit through diet or exercise. I calculated my BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate - Calories burned at rest) with the Harris–Benedict equation, you can use an online BMR calculator to do this. Then factor in your daily activity level (track each activity by burn calories - ie. biked hills 1 hour = 600 calories, or multiply your BMR by 1.2-1.9 (low activity-highly active) to figure out how much you burn every day. Nutritionists and Personal Trainers often suggest creating a "caloric deficit" to lose weight, whether that's through exercise or diet. This article suggests 300-500 calorie deficit per day for athletes for weight loss - http://bit.ly/2yM7Kg9. This Mayo Clinic article suggests 500 cut/burn PER DAY...and you think I'm extreme?!) http://bit.ly/mayoclinicarticle Why these numbers? Because there are 3500 calories in a pound of fat. Burn/cut 100 calories per day = lose 1lb per month Burn/cut 300 calories per day = lose 1 lb in 10 days Burn/cut 500 calories per day = lose 1 lb in a week *****When I say "got back from my trip" I was talking about a TWO MONTH trip. Not a one week vacation. losing 3 pounds per month is not an insane weight loss, and actually equates to around 290 calorie deficit per day (give or take)***** For those saying "I eat 2000-3000 in calories per day" you may be much more active than me, please also consider your height, age, hormonal balance and metabolism. Hormones and metabolism aside, walking burns around 200 calories per hour. If you walk at your job for 2 hours, go to the supermarket for a half hour, clean your house for 1 hour, do laundry for a half, even prepare meals for 1 hour - You probably burned 1000 before you even walked into a gym! Let's say your BMR is 1400, that means you would burn 2400 calories that day with those activity calories included, so if you were to only consume 1300, you'd have a 1000 DEFICIT - which is SUPER high and not healthy for a person with that BMR. SO on a day like that, you could just go to the gym and do a light workout and burn 200 calories and EAT 2400 and still lose weight in the long term, OR you just eat 2000 not even go to the gym you'll still have a 200 calorie deficit. This is WHY you can eat the calories you do, or you sit like me most of the week, but have a ton of muscle or a very very fast metabolism. I know some fruitarians preaching high calories and doing nothing - that consider "nothing" going for 1-3 hour bike rides every day, burning 650-800 calories per hour (depending on intensity) - and act like they are surprised they lose weight on their diet! If you burn over 1000 calories per day just biking, and you do some errands and house work, you're likely around 1500-2000 calories burned per day on TOP of your BMR - which means you could literally eat 2800-3400 calories per day and not gain a pound.. If that fruitarian is a muscular guy (like my 30 y/o fiance), at 5'11 and 180lbs, his BMR is 1900, he burns around 1000 through his daily life routine, and could burn an extra 1300+ calories biking two hours, he'd need to eat around 4200 to maintain his weight and eat more to gain weight/build muscle. Call me crazy for believing science, nutritionists, and using a formula. PS- I personally don't believe there is a *one size fits all* calorie count for ALL WOMEN, especially since we have different genetics, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal issues, response to glucose, activity levels etc. I feel everyone should have an understanding of their BMR (cals burned at resting state) and how many cals they burn during daily activities before cutting their calories.
